Research conducted within the FF GreEN \u2013 Forward-Looking Framework for Accelerating Households\u2019 Green Energy Transition project was presented at the 10th International Conference on Mining and Environmental Protection (MEP 2026), held from 9 to 12 September 2026 in Sokobanja, Serbia, and organized by the University of Belgrade \u2013 Faculty of Mining and Geology.<\/p>\n

The conference featured the paper \u201cExploring the Potential for Air Pollution Mitigation in Urban Environments: A Case Study of Vranje\u201d, authored by Marija \u017divkovi\u0107, Dejan Ivezi\u0107, Boban Pavlovi\u0107, and Aleksandar Mad\u017earevi\u0107 from the University of Belgrade \u2013 Faculty of Mining and Geology.<\/p>\n

The study examines opportunities for reducing air pollution in urban areas through the transformation of the household heating sector, using the City of Vranje as a case study. A key contribution of the research lies in integrating energy planning, participatory backcasting, and energy modelling, thereby enabling local stakeholders to participate in defining future development pathways for the energy system.<\/p>\n

As part of the research, the existing heating system in Vranje was analysed and the 2023 energy balance was reconstructed. The results indicate a strong predominance of individual heating systems based on woody biomass, which accounts for the largest share of final energy consumption for heating in the urban area of Vranje. Based on the developed energy model, emissions of major air pollutants were also estimated, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NO\u2093), and sulphur dioxide (SO\u2082).<\/p>\n

The participatory planning process enabled the identification of several options for transforming the heating sector, including improvements in energy efficiency, expansion of the district heating system, diversification of renewable energy sources, and the implementation of smart energy management systems. These options were translated into different development scenarios and analysed using the LEAP software model.<\/p>\n

The modelling results demonstrated the potential of different combinations of measures to reduce both energy consumption and pollutant emissions. Particular attention was given to a scenario integrating all proposed measures, with projections extending to 2050. Under this scenario, a continuous decline in CO, NO\u2093, and SO\u2082 emissions, as well as in greenhouse gas emissions, was estimated, highlighting the importance of an integrated approach to planning the household energy transition.<\/p>\n

The presented research represents another outcome of the FF GreEN project, which seeks to establish a basis for the long-term planning of the green energy transition in households by integrating the technical, economic, social, and behavioural dimensions of the energy transition. The results obtained for Vranje provide support for the further development of local strategic documents and policy measures aimed at reducing emissions, improving energy efficiency, and enhancing air quality.<\/p>\n
